On a more personal note, this year has been frightfully busy for our family. I have found this summer has flown by, especially when all I seem to remember is all the cold and rain we had. I now really, really, really appreciate what my Mom and Dad must have gone through when my brother and I were young. My reflection on my childhood came about as I finally got around to tidying up my gardens, before that white stuff starts to arrive. It’s amazing how you relax and reflect as your toil around your garden and I certainly missed having the time to do so this year.

Well folks, this outdoor gardening year is coming to an end very soon. I didn’t get much time in the garden this year with everything going on in our lives. I managed to get out last weekend to tidy up my gardens before that white stuff starts to arrive (if I don't name it maybe it won't come too soon). It's amazing how you relax and reflect as your toil around your garden and I certainly missed having the time to do so this year. One thing I noticed was the rush I must have been in to put the plants from this year’s fantastic plant sale and a few kind donations from friends in the garden. It had a very poor shape all season with too many tall plants together and not in the right place. After the tidying up and cutting down of the Hollyhocks, Shasta Daisies and others, the garden seemed much better tamed. I will have to make a note to myself to move some of the plants around in the early spring.

Hopefully you have had much better success at enjoying your gardens this year. Don't forget to also clean your garden tools and make your own notes to plan changes and additions for next year. Now, perhaps, I will turn my green thumb to those challenging indoor plants, which should keep me busy well into next year.

Robert Barta. KMHS President

POT LUCK SUPPER

On

Friday 4 December 2009

6.30 for 7pm

at

Kanata United Church

33 Leacock Drive

Our annual Pot Luck Supper is almost here. The format will be as usual, a relaxing evening to get to know your fellow members, have some great food and see the results of the photo competition. Guests are very welcome and the charge will be the same as at our meetings, $5. All we ask is that you bring one of the following items with you:

·         an appetizer

·         a starter

·         a main course dish

·         a dessert.

We do need some help earlier in the day (1.00-2.00pm) to set up the tables & chairs, also a couple of people  to  be in the kitchen just before 6.30 to sort out the food as it arrives.

We will have our gift exchange. Anyone wishing to participate should bring a wrapped gift valued around $10. There will, as usual, be a box for contribution to the Kanata food cupboard.

I need to know numbers before the day for setting out the tables & chairs so would be grateful if you could email or call me to let me know if you are attending also if you can help on the day.

Hope to see you Friday 4 December.

In mid November we will be having a work day at my house to make the table decoration for the Pot Luck. Anyone interested in helping should contact me by phone or email and I will be in touch once I have set a date.

KMHS 40th Anniversary Competition

We have received four entries for your 40th Anniversary theme and slogan competition. We will vote for the winner and runner up at this week’s meeting. If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to vote, please either email me at the address on the left or phone me at 613 839-0290 with your selection. The entries are:

1.     Life Begins at Forty, Start Planting (the words would be arranged in a logo to make the number 40)

2.     Gardening for the Future (to tie in with a conservation theme)

3.     Garden for the Future (to tie into a biodiversity theme)

4.     Gardening for the Greater Good (this is to tie in with the United Nations year of Biodiversity 2010)

Thank you very much all the members who took the time to think about a theme for next year—I think you’ve done a great job.

Down the Garden Path

(Notes from the KMHS history files.)

Composting:  I am sure that you are all aware of the new compost program sponsored by the City of Ottawa. Some of you may already have received your “green bin” to be put in use early in the new year.  According to our historical files, KMHS wrote a composting leaflet in the fall of 1990, entitled “All you ever wanted to know about composting”.  It answered questions such as “what is compost?”, “what is so great about compost?”, “does it smell?”, “what is the best way to build the pile or fill the bin?” etc, etc. The composting tips were distributed to the citizens of Kanata, courtesy of the City of Kanata and the Kanata Standard.

Litter Decomposition:  the time it takes to decompose what thoughtless persons throw out the car window:

Paper:  two to five months

Orange peels:  six months

Milk cartons: five years

Filter-tip cigarette butts: 10 to 12 years

Plastic bags: 10 to 20 years

Leather shoes: 25 to 40 years

Nylon cloth: 30 to 40 years

Plastic containers: 50 to 80 years

Aluminium: 90 to 100 years

Plastic foam: never

Yet More Honours:  The KMHS newsletter was the best in the 1993 Ontario Horticultural Society newsletter contest, in the category of no advertising and number of publications per year. The newsletter editor had several requests for copies of both winning newsletters and yearbooks, as clever societies were trying to figure out what the winning tips were.

On the subject of newsletters:  Did you know that in 1993 KMHS had a newsletter dedicated to junior gardeners? The topics included how to plant giant sunflowers, an invitation to a “Bring and Brag” plant show and how to recognize good bugs/bad bugs.

One last note on Orchids

Just a quick follow up to the discussion in the October meeting about growing orchids and the type of medium in which they flourish. Bill Neill sent us the following note.

“I was looking all around and found bags of "Shultz" Orchid potting mix at Home Depot! By the way, I also noticed that some Wal-Marts have it too at a good price in case anyone else wants to know. It is wood chip based with no moss.

If you are looking for an orchid, Home Depot in Kanata had a very nice selection last week (good prices too )!”

Thanks for the input Bill.
