Our Annual
General Meeting (AGM) will be held
on at the beginning of the
November 3rd
meeting. The three executive roles of President, Treasurer and
Secretary will be open. David Davidson, Heather Lee and I will not
be stepping forward, as we have all completed our two year term and
new blood is needed. The new executive will also need you to vote in
four directors, to assist with Society activities. Below
you can find
the list of your
current executive list with contact info, in case you will like to
speak to any of us prior to our AGM. 2008

2009-2010 Directors On a
more personal note, this year has been frightfully busy for our
family. I have found this summer has flown by, especially when all I
seem to remember is all the cold and rain we had. I now really,
really, really appreciate what my Mom and Dad must have gone through
when my brother and I were young. My reflection on my childhood came
about as I finally got around to tidying up my gardens, before that
white stuff starts to arrive. It’s amazing how you relax and reflect
as your toil around your garden and I certainly missed having the
time to do so this year. Well
folks, this outdoor gardening year is coming to an end very soon. I
didn’t get much time in the garden this year with everything going
on in our lives. I managed to get out last weekend to tidy up my
gardens before that white stuff starts to arrive (if I don't name it
maybe it won't come too soon). It's amazing how you relax and
reflect as your toil around your garden and I certainly missed
having the time to do so this year. One thing I noticed was the rush
I must have been in to put the plants from this year’s fantastic
plant sale and a few kind donations from friends in the garden. It
had a very poor shape all season with too many tall plants together
and not in the right place. After the tidying up and cutting down of
the Hollyhocks, Shasta Daisies and others, the garden seemed much
better tamed. I will have to make a note to myself to move some of
the plants around in the early spring.
Hopefully you have had much better success at enjoying your gardens
this year. Don't forget to also clean your garden tools and make
your own notes to plan changes and additions for next year. Now,
perhaps, I will turn my green thumb to those challenging indoor
plants, which should keep me busy well into next year. Robert Barta. KMHS President |

Grow to Show and Show What You Grow
with Sheila King Have you
ever wondered how they manage to get such beautiful entries at a
flower/plant show? Are you interested in entering next year’s flower
show or grow beautiful plants for your own pleasure? Join Sheila
King as she gives a talk on how to Grow to Show and Show What You
Grow! We will
hold a very short AGM at the start of the meeting to review this

Yet More
Honours:
The KMHS newsletter was the best in the 1993
Ontario Horticultural Society newsletter contest, in the category of
no advertising and number of publications per year. The newsletter
editor had several requests for copies of both winning newsletters
and yearbooks, as clever societies were trying to figure out what
the winning tips were.
On the
subject of newsletters:
Did you know that in 1993 KMHS had a
newsletter dedicated to junior gardeners? The topics included how to
plant giant sunflowers, an invitation to a “Bring and Brag” plant
show and how to recognize good bugs/bad bugs. Gisčle Robertson, KMHS historian |

One last note on Orchids Just a quick follow up
to the discussion in the October meeting about growing orchids and
the type of medium in which they flourish. Bill Neill sent us the
following note.

at Home Depot! By the way, I also noticed that some Wal-Marts have
it too at a good price in case anyone else wants to know. It is wood
chip based with no moss.

you are looking for an orchid, Home Depot in
